What to wear on holiday

What to Wear on Holiday: Effortless Pieces You’ll Actually Wear

There’s always a moment before a holiday where packing feels exciting - and then suddenly overwhelming.

You start thinking about outfit ideas, different occasions, the weather, how many pairs of shoes to take, and before long you’re staring at a suitcase wondering how it all got so complicated.

At Covet, we’ve always believed that what to wear on holiday shouldn’t feel like a separate version of yourself. It should feel like you - just a little more relaxed, a little lighter, and a little easier.

And really, holiday packing is a big part of the holiday itself.

If we’re dreaming about what to wear, we might as well go the whole distance and think about what to pack too.

Packing for a vacation doesn’t need to mean overthinking every outfit. With the right pieces, you can build a wardrobe that works across the whole trip, without overpacking or losing your sense of style.

What to Wear on Holiday

Choosing what to wear on holiday isn’t just about fashion - it affects how comfortable you feel, how confident you are, and how easily you move through your day.

From travelling to exploring, long lunches to evenings out, your clothes need to work with you, not against you.

A well-planned holiday wardrobe means:

  • you can pack lighter
  • you don’t need to change outfits constantly
  • everything works together

I always like to pack things I can wear in a couple of outfits - pieces that work just as well in the evening as they do on the beach.

Instead of packing lots of individual outfits, focus on combinations. Pieces that layer, mix, and adapt.

Accessories can then shift a look from day to evening, without needing a completely different outfit.

What To Pack For A Holiday

When building a vacation packing list, the aim is not to increase the number of items, but to reduce it - while making each piece more useful.

When packing for a holiday, it’s always worth thinking about versatility - pieces that can move easily between day and evening, or adapt to slightly different climates. We often come back to the idea of transitional outfits, where a few well-chosen items can be styled in multiple ways without overpacking.

Clothes to Wear on Holiday

White linen shirt and trousers are always my starting point.

The shirt goes with everything, and they look great worn together. Add some jewellery in the evening, or throw it over your costume on the beach.

This is exactly the kind of combination that makes travel packing easier - simple, versatile, and effortless.

Dresses to Wear on Holiday

Anyone who knows me knows I love a bit of One Season - it’s so feminine and easy to wear.

The fabric is great for packing as it doesn’t crease, and its floaty nature makes it perfect in the heat.

A good dress is often the easiest piece to take away. It requires very little thought, but always feels put together.

Best Shoes to Wear on Holiday

Shoes are where most people overpack.

In reality, you only need:

  • a comfortable pair for walking
  • something easy for the beach
  • and a slightly smarter option if needed

A comfy pair of DATE trainers works perfectly, along with something like Cacatoes for the beach.

Limiting your pairs of shoes is one of the easiest ways to save space.

Lightweight Layers

Even in warmer climates, layers are essential.

Denim shorts work with everything - we’ve had some great ones this season from Les Temps - and I always think about what I’d wear travelling too.

You’re probably going to want to wear it on the way home, but it can also work for cooler evenings.

A little cashmere cardigan and a pair of light, looser-fit jeans fit the bill perfectly.

If you need a jacket, something like Seventy + Mochi works really well as a denim cover-up - it goes with everything.

Statement Pieces

We’ve just had our delivery of ME369, and I love their trousers and dresses - but the skirt works particularly well for holidays too.

It’s about having one or two pieces that feel a bit special but still easy to wear.

Accessories

Accessories do a lot of quiet work.

It can be really handy to take a scarf - an extra layer of warmth that’s easy to throw on and just as easy to put in your bag.

A good handbag can do more than one job too. A powder or make-up bag can double as an evening bag, which helps cut down on taking too much.

I also like a big leather weekend bag as my carry-on.

And then the essentials:

  • sunglasses
  • a baseball cap
  • and an aid kit with your travel-sized bits

Holiday Outfits

Rather than planning lots of separate looks, it helps to think in simple combinations.

Daytime Exploring

  • relaxed trousers or denim shorts
  • lightweight top or linen shirt
  • trainers

This is the kind of outfit you’ll wear again and again.

Beach to Lunch

  • easy dress or linen set
  • sandals
  • jewellery

Effortless, but still considered.

Travel Days

  • soft trousers or jeans
  • breathable top
  • light knit

Comfort matters most here - but it doesn’t mean compromising on style.

How To Look Stylish On Holiday

Looking stylish on holiday isn’t about packing more - it’s about choosing better.

Stick to a Cohesive Colour Palette

This makes it easier to create outfit ideas from a smaller number of items.

Choose Lightweight, Breathable Fabrics

Linen and cotton are ideal - especially when packing for a vacation in warmer climates.

Mix Basics with One or Two Standout Pieces

This keeps your wardrobe interesting without overcomplicating it.

Use Accessories to Elevate Simple Looks

A scarf, jewellery, or a different bag can completely change an outfit.

Final Thoughts

What to wear on holiday doesn’t need to be complicated.

The best approach is always the simplest one:

  • choose pieces you already love
  • focus on comfort and versatility
  • pack less, but pack better

When everything works together, you spend less time thinking about what to wear - and more time enjoying your holiday.
